Eritrean Community in Jeddah
The National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) was founded in 1979 during the liberation struggle led by the People's Front for National Independence and Social Justice. This significant and historic event provided a broad platform for Eritrean women to unite under the national association and to fight vigorously and in an organized manner for national independence, women's rights, and dignity.
During the liberation struggle, Eritrean women in Jeddah volunteered large amount of money, as well as gold, under the slogan "My Homeland is My Jewel." the NUEW was established in Jeddah in 2002, encompassing a wide variety of activities undertaken by Eritrean women. They built and developed a modern building for women to conduct their activities in the city of Illaberid.
They also care for the families of martyrs: To date, 87 families of martyrs have been sponsored, and candles are sold on June 20th of each year for donation to the Ministry of Labor and Human Security. They also organize various professional activities, such as curriculum tutoring programs, sewing, and important seminars, hosting experts on health and social issues. They work to change collective thinking in culture and traditions.
Participating in and celebrating national holidays such as March 8th, Independence Day, June 20th Martyrs' Day, September 1st, and other annual festival activities. Participating in cultural and artistic performances at Dar Al-Hekma University, Batterjee Medical College, Africa Day, the American International School, and Mama Africa. Awards are also granted to encourage outstanding female students.
These are some summaries of the activities that have been implemented. The members of the Jeddah Women's Union are not satisfied with these achievements, but rather they continually strive to implement, achieve, and build better and more advanced generations, businesses, and programs.
